3 stars – I liked it

Suzanna is determined to keep her first Primori safe, especially since she is falling for him. When a demon targets him she decides to hire him as her bodyguard to keep a closer eye on him, but quickly finds herself falling even more in love with him.

So I have not read Lexi Blake’s Masters & Mercenaries series and it isn’t necessary to read this book. This is completely in the Demonica world, with only brief references to the M&M characters. Nothing is brought over from that world that would be confusing so don’t feel you have to read that series first.

Suzanna may be a young Memitim, but she is determined to do her duty, even if she doesn’t really enjoy it. I liked that Suzanna knows what she wants but also takes her angelic orders seriously. I liked her but felt that some of her actions in the beginning of this book towards Declan were annoying. I do hope we see some of her cooking show in the future though.

Declan is an alpha male who keeps most people at a distance. He had a rough childhood that has made him leery of people, especially rich people. I liked Declan a lot. He was a great hero and was constantly trying to take care of Suzanna. Their relationship is forbidden but that doesn’t stop them from wanting each other. I enjoyed their relationship overall and was surprised by Suzanna’s punishment for breaking the rules.

We also get brief returns of some of the original characters from this series, which I loved because I miss those guys. There is more on Azagoth and Lilianna’s relationship in this as well and we finally find out why she left. I do hope they reunite soon though because I hate seeing them apart. Overall, this was a pretty good novella and I look forward to the next book.

Trigger warnings: death of a sibling; dog attack briefly mentioned; neglectful parents; attempted filicide discussed;
