It’s been four years since the last Hidden Legacy book came out, so I was so excited to jump back into this world. This follows Augustine Montgomery, who I have been dying to learn more about since he was introduced in the very first book, and Diana Harrison, an animal Prime and head of house Harrison. So needless to say, I was just so excited to have another book in this series and for it to focus on two of the most fascinating side characters of the series.
Diana comes to Augustine for help in finding who stole a very important animal cub from their House. Augustine has been a fascinating character throughout this series but in this we actually get to learn more about his family and why he has acted the way he has. I wasn’t surprised that his life had a big tragedy in it but some aspects of it were surprising. Also the more we learn about Augustine, the more you realize how powerful he really is and how well he is at hiding it.
Diana Harrison is a Prime animal mage who actually appears mostly normal. Animal mages struggle to appear normal because their bonds with animals are so strong they act more animal-like. We quickly learn in this that Diana is a bit feral and she is just really good at hiding it. I really loved Diana and how dangerous she was. She didn’t let Augustine control everything and was frequently the first to attack. I just really loved her, which doesn’t really surprise me because I also liked her brother Cornelius a lot too.
From the very beginning, there is attraction between these two but as the story progresses we see them both start to realize their feelings are becoming more than just attraction. I really enjoyed seeing their feelings develop as they hunted for the culprits behind the animal kidnapping. I will admit, I was a bit disappointed that we don’t get to see them as a couple, but it just makes me hopeful we will get a follow up story showing Augustine pursuing Diana and staking his claim.
Overall, this was a fantastic addition to this series. I love this world so much and am always excited when new books come out. I am still really hopeful that we will get Arabella’s stories, but I will tide myself over with the bonus short stories about Arabella that are also included with this.
TW: death of a family members mentioned; emotionally neglectful parents mentioned; animal cruelty mentioned;
