Title: A Vampire’s Mate
Author: Rebecca Zanetti
Series: Dark Protectors #16.5
Pages: 144

Jasper Maxwell met his mate during WWII while they both were on important assignments. They mated to save her life and promised that they eventually would reunite. Five decades later and Leah is still managing to escape him. But when she starts being hunted by Kurjan, Jasper finally has a chance to win his mate over.
This was a short and fast paced novella. Leah is a spy and has spent years doing dangerous work. Her current job is taking down child traffickers and that has led to her hunting Kurjan’s who are helping with the trafficking. Leah was great. She was smart, capable, and refused to give into Jasper’s demanding ways. I liked that she never backed down and did what she had planned to do, even if it was dangerous for her.
Jasper was a character I didn’t really love. He was demanding and controlling. He expected Leah to just follow along with any of his orders and never actually talked to her. It felt like he just wanted to have a woman at his side, not an actual partner and wife.
In this we see that even though a treaty has been signed between the kurjans, demons, and vampire realms, there is still danger and spin-off groups causing chaos. Overall, while I didn’t love this couple, I still liked Leah and want to see more of her in the future.
TW: human trafficking; kidnapping; injuries; gun violence;
