4 stars – It was really good

When Alasdair goes searching for his missing friend Merril, he never expects to find an enchanting woman who is determined to keep her distance from everyone. Lotti has spent her life hiding away from others but she can’t hide from her feelings for Alasdair or the truth they uncover.

This book was a bit surprising. I didn’t expect to like Alasdair and Lotti’s story as much as I did. Alasdair is a bit done with humans and all the things that have happened to the Kings recently. He is angry, grumpy, and not very likable at first, but the more he opens up to Lotti the more I liked him. Lotti was a mystery. She has magical abilities but can’t control them, which is why she stays alone. I really liked Lotti from the beginning. She was sweet, lonely, and courageous. Her backstory was heartbreaking and made me push for these two to get together faster.

While these two are slowly falling for each other, we also finally get to learn the truth about the Divine and what is happening in Stonemore. I was very surprised by what Alasdair and Lotti uncovered because it changes everything for the Kings and dragons. I am very interested in reading the next book now to see how they react to all of this new information, and to see what Merril does.

Trigger Warnings: child abandonment; references to the killing of children; imprisonment

    1. This series is actually a spin off of the Dark Kings series and if you haven’t read it you might be a bit confused. Grant unfortunately ties almost all her series together so you kind of have to read them in publication order to get the full picture of what is happening. You can always give this series a try though and see if it makes sense without reading the other series.
