Crispinus Delacort is an immortal rogue hunter and homicide detective. He works in a quiet city though and rarely has to investigate a murder. So when he gets called out for human bones being discovered in a garden, he is surprised. He is even more surprised when he realizes the woman who found the bones is his life mate.
Crispinus is a new immortal for the series, but he is one of Basil’s (The Immortal Who Loved Me) 22 children. Crispin is almost 3000 years old and wasn’t expecting to find his life mate. Crispin was a great guy who tried really hard to woo Abril. I really liked him. He never felt controlling, or demanding like some of the really old immortals have been. I also loved learning that he has helped take care of his siblings.
Abril is a strong and independent woman who is a bit leary of men and marriage. She has been on her own since she was 16 and has made a life for herself as a personal assistant. I liked how capable she was and how she handled everything that happened. I especially enjoyed how annoyed she was getting with Lucian and that she wasn’t afraid to call him names. Like the rest of the series, these two had instant chemistry and feelings didn’t take long to follow. I enjoyed their relationship and that Crispin respected Abril’s initial decision for no sex.
The murder mystery aspect of this was interesting. At first it is unclear if it’s a serial killer or a rogue immortal situation, so uncovering what happened was interesting. I think it would have been a little more enjoyable if what was uncovered wasn’t coming as recounted discoveries from others, but I still enjoyed it.
Overall, thirty-seven books in and I still enjoy this series. This was an enjoyable couple and it’s great meeting some of the people who have only been briefly mentioned in previous books. I look forward to the next book.
TW: death; Discussions of growing up in a religious cult, bullying, forced teenage marriage, and domestic abuse; A dog is drugged but isn’t harmed from it; kidnapping and torture;
