Title: The Reluctant Vampire
Author: Lynsay Sands
Series: Argeneau #15
Pages: 385

Rogue Hunter Drina Argenis has been sent to Port Henry to be a bodyguard/babysitter for a teenage vampire. She is also being sent there because Marguerite believes Harper Stoyan may be her life mate and she was correct. But Harper just lost a life mate and so Drina has to go slow and not tell him right away.
This was an interesting one because Harper is so depressed and determined to believe that his current passions for food and sex are remnants from when he met Jenny, even though it’s been over a year of him not showing those signs. I actually enjoyed the slow build up of this relationship with the life mate bond not being their main focus. These two basically spent time together and for Harper, the feelings developed before he realized they were life mates.
Drina is probably the most fascinating female character in this series so far. She was a perfume maker, Amazon, concubine, duchess, pirate, a madam, and now a rogue hutner. She has lived such an adventurous life and refused to let herself be ruled over by men, and I loved her for it. I also loved how determined Drina was to win Harper over, especially that she didn’t let him push her away for long. She was just a wonderful heroine who didn’t take any shit, and it was great.
Harper was a sweet man who unfortunately lost his life mate during the turning process. In the beginning we see a depressed man who is struggling, but as he spends time with Drina he sheds the depression and life is reawakened for him again. We also learn new things about his former life mate that change his perspective on her and his current relationship with Drina.
Overall, this was surprisingly great considering Harper was a minor background character and Drina is all new. I really enjoyed their relationship and how it grew. I am also very curious about Stephanie now because of all the new information we learn about her abilities in this one.
TW: unexpected death of first wife/life mate; house fire and burns; runaway child; racism and use of N word (by a minor side character); death of friends recounted;
