4 stars – It was really good

Stephanie McGill was attacked and turned when she was a teenager. Unfortunately, she is unlike any other immortal. She can’t control her ability to read minds and she never gets any peace and quiet. Now thirteen years later, she is living a quiet life in the country. But once her new neighbor arrives everything changes.

Stephanie was originally introduced in book 11, The Immortal Hunter. She was kidnapped with her older sister and turned against her will. She has had no control over her ability to read minds from the beginning but things have suddenly changed and she is even more worried about it now. Stephanie is a very interesting heroine. She has a unique ability that she is terrified of but she still uses it to help track rogues. I liked that she doesn’t let her fear hold her back. I also liked that she was a writer and wrote about her experiences, much like Lucern does (Single White Vampire). I just love the idea of a paranormal writing about their experiences and selling it to humans as fiction.

Thorne is a very interesting character. He was originally introduced in book 25, Immortal Unchained. He is a genetic experiment done by the mad scientist Dr. Dressler, who turned himself into an immortal and has been on the run for the past few years.  Thorne originally comes to Canada with the plan to have his wings removed because he wants to live a normal life, which also will give his mother and aunt a normal life for once. I really loved his dedication to his mother and aunt. He is willing to give up everything for them to have a few years of happiness.

Thorne and Stephanie have an instant attraction that all life mates have. I really enjoyed their relationship. It was emotional, captivating, and just really sweet at times. They hit it off instantly but quickly realize they haven’t really talked about their future or gotten to know each other. So we see them actually take some time to talk about who they are, their wants and needs, and that they do want a future with them, even if at first they don’t know how that would work. I really loved this aspect of the book because some of these books feel like they skip over the get to know each other part. Another aspect that I surprisingly enjoyed, was that this took place almost completely at Stephanie’s house which really allowed the focus to be on their relationship. There were still action packed fights against rogues but this one definitely focused more on the couple.

My biggest complaint would be around Dr. Dressler. We finally see the return of him as he has been eluding the rogue hunters for a few years now, but it all comes to an end rather quickly. For a villain who has been on the run for a few years, he has barely been brought back into the story and once he was, it wasn’t as exciting as I was expecting. I wasn’t surprised though that his own greed and ego got the better of him

Overall, I really loved this one. I loved seeing Thorne find that he can have a normal life and find love, and for Stephanie to gain some confidence in herself for once and not think of herself going rogue. Also, I really loved Thorne’s mother and hope we do see more of her in the future, hopefully finding a life mate
