3 stars – I liked it

While running from his kidnappers, Dante Notte doesn’t expect to suddenly find his life mate or to be run over by an RV. Now he has to convince Mary that she is his life mate and protect her from the people who kidnapped him.

Dante and his brother Tomasso have been recurring characters for a while in this series and are usually seen helping new turns handle their fangs. Dante is relatively young for the immortals in this series at just a little over 100, so he still eats and has sex. It was kind of nice having a male immortal who wasn’t so out of touch with the world but still struggling to explain everything to his life mate. I liked Dante a lot in the end. He was protective but understood Mary was a capable woman who had no problem getting herself out of situations, even if it ended with her injured. I also agreed with Dante and think Mary should have left her husband and not given him another chance, but that’s just me.

Mary was a smart, capable, and strong woman who has been through a lot. She is 62 years old and a recent widow who is still grieving. I liked how spunky and independent Mary was in this. She didn’t let Dante push her around or stop her from doing what she wanted. She also handles the whole immortal and life mate thing really well, which I appreciated. The only thing I didn’t really like about Mary isn’t really relevant to her and Dante’s relationship. I think she shouldn’t have given her husband a second chance after he cheated on her multiple times and did some other things that are not cool. She may go on about how amazing he was for the last 10 years of their marriage but those first decades don’t redeem him in my eyes.

Dante and Mary had the usually fated mates/instant love story but it takes place while they are on the road in an RV trying to keep ahead of the kidnappers. I enjoyed their relationship overall, especially that Dante respected Mary from the beginning and didn’t treat her like an object (like the previous book).

Overall, this was another enjoyable Argeneau book. I am really interested in reading the next one to find out what has been happening to Tomasso and how they stop these kidnappers. Also to know why they are kidnapping people, which wasn’t discovered in this one.

TW: recent death of spouse; grief; kidnapping; car accidents; infidelity discussed; infertility and miscarriage discussed
