4 stars – It was really good

When Jeanne Louise Argeneau left work one afternoon, she never expected to be kidnapped or find out that her kidnapper is her lifemate. Now she is on the run from her family while she helps Paul take care of his sick daughter and figure out their future together.

This book was just as emotional as I remembered it being. This deals with very heavy topics because Paul’s daughter Livy has a cancerous brain tumor that is growing rapidly and killing her. He kidnaps Jeanne Louise in the hopes that she can change his daughter to save her. Paul is also a widow after his wife died shortly after a dangerous car accident. So this book has a lot of heavy topics of illness, grief, and loss of hope. But while this does deal with heavy topics, I think Sands did a great job at balancing it out with the love, happiness, and romance building between Jeanne Louise and Paul.

The romance between Paul and Jeanne Louise was fast and sweet. Paul knows that she is a vampire when he kidnaps her because he works for the Argeneau research team, but he doesn’t know everything about immortals, like what a lifemate is. I I enjoyed their relationship even though there was always the shadow of grief surrounding it because of Livy’s condition. What I didn’t expect in this story was how the turning of Livy and Paul played out. I was really expecting it all to go according to Jeanne Louise plan, but it didn’t and it was a third act breakup that I wasn’t expecting. I still enjoyed it but Sands really wanted to pull all the emotions out with this one.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one and it was great to see Jeanne Louise find a lifemate. I also really liked that she was very young compared to all the previous immortals and isn’t as numb to life as a lot of the ancient ones were. I can’t wait to see who falls next.

TW: child with fast growing cancerous brain tumor; scene with extremely injured child; grief; kidnapping; death of wife discussed;
