4 stars – It was really good

This picks up hours after the previous book ends. Zahira has arrived in New Orleans to help interview the new drakul and do research about John’s past. But things are quickly thwarted when Caleb is accused of murdering one of the people from his tours.

This was a very interesting one because I never expected a doppelganger as a demon. It led for a very interesting chase though and I liked how they brought it down in the end, with the help of the new drakul. Night, the new drakul, was a very interesting character and we slowly got to know a little about them, and their constant refrain of mortal foolishness. We do see a bit of tension between Night and Caleb/Gray because they are so leary of a new drakul after their previous experiences.

John’s past is starting to be revealed in this and it was a doozy of a reveal. It has led to him questioning everything and doubting what is real or not. I will be totally jumping right into the next book to see what will happen next and what will be revealed about John’s past. Also to learn more about the new drakul.

TW: frequent mentions of John’s toxic parents that involuntary institutionalized John in a rehabilitation (conversion) facility as a teenager which lead to a suicide attempt;
