Genevieve “Gen” Durand has finally arrived at her family’s crumbling chateau. She is determined to build a new life and change her terrible dating habits. She is also dealing with the realization that her wealthy godfather is shady as hell and can’t be trusted. When an irreplaceable painting is stolen, Gen and the rest of the guys have to find out who did it and recover it, and discover the truth about why it was taken in the first place.
This takes place shortly after the previous book left off. Gen is a headstrong and brash woman and we see it get her into risky situations quite a few times in this. Her magic is different from her sisters but she can still do very cool things with shadows. Roux is a tiger shifter and is usually the one planning and assigning details for all the missions. He is very meticulous and quiet, which is the opposite of Gen. Throughout the book we get just little tibits about both of their pasts and some of their regrets.
Gen and Roux’s relationship was a bit of a struggle for me. At the start of this book Gen is drooling over their childhood friend, Detective Clement, and that doesn’t really change until close to halfway through the book. For the first chunk of this book, Gen sees Roux as just an annoying bodyguard who she thinks is following her on orders. But as soon as she finds out that isn’t true (which is about when she finally comes to her senses about Clement) she instantly does a 180 and starts seeing him as an attractive man she has the hots for. It was just a very abrupt change of pace and their relationship was the same. They went from trying to ignore their feelings to being all over each other very quickly. Basically, while I did enjoy their relationship overall, it was very abrupt and had very little actual development or conversations with them getting to know each other.
The mystery of the stolen painting was interesting and brought back the hated Celeste. I enjoyed how this expanded the world. It showed us more vampires and another wizard. This did lead to a lot of new revelations about Gordon and their father, so I will be very interested in seeing how that will be handled in the next book.
