4 stars – It was really good

Hiro has the ability to see the dead and is determined to use it to solve his brother’s murder. But the problem is that he has to work with Detective Maddox Booker, a grumpy and stubborn man who seems to not like him and doesn’t believe in ghosts. It doesn’t take long for feelings on both sides to change as these two keep uncovering new leads and mysteries with this case.

From the very beginning I was hooked on this story. I love a detective and medium mystery and this one was very captivating. Hiro was an amusing and a bit reckless man who is determined to use his ability to help ghosts cross over. He was fun, sassy, and a bit naive to how dangerous working to find a serial killer can be. I liked him, even if some of the conversations in this were just so ridiculous but at least it was all entertaining.

Maddox is the grumpy and stubborn detective who doesn’t really have any friends. He is a loner and not really friendly, but has a heart of gold underneath his shell. I really loved learning more about him and seeing him open up to Hiro as the case progressed. Hiro and Maddox’s relationship is a little slow at first as they get to know each other and Maddox gets used to the idea of ghosts being real. I enjoyed the progression of their relationship, especially since it didn’t overpower the mystery of the serial killer.

The mystery of who is the serial killer was pretty interesting for me. I never expected it to be who it was or for all the things that happened leading up to it. This book just really kept me on my toes because I just never knew what would happen next with the case.

Overall, I really enjoyed this and think it was a great start to a series. I am very interested in the progression of Hiro and Maddox’s relationship and what case they will be working on next.

TW: murder and murder attempts; recent death of sibling; grief; death of a friend; strangulation;
