When Mina inherits a crumbling Chateau in the remote corner of France she desperately accepts any tenants she can get, including four dangerous paranormals who are looking for a place to train for a few months. These four are trying to run from their past and start new, but they quickly realize things are not as they seem.
This was a strong start for a new paranormal series featuring shifters, found family, and fated mates. Mina is a smart, capable, and headstrong woman who isn’t as human as she appears. She may not be a shifter, but she still has her own magical talent. Marius is a dragon shifter who is trying to redeem his past by working for a man named Gordon, who happens to be Mina’s godfather. This chance is supposed to allow them to wipe their criminal pasts and start fresh, but they quickly realize they are still being used as mercenaries and doing shady things.
Marius and Mina have a fated mates relationship but it is very slow building because Marius is fighting it for most of the book. Also, since Mina is not a shifter she doesn’t have the instant knowledge of the bond like Marius does so her feelings grow a bit more normally. I did enjoy Marius and Mina’s relationship and how it built during their time at the Chateau and while on the mission. My only real complaint about their relationship was that there wasn’t any discussions of their official feelings, their future, or about how they were going to deal with him going out on missions. I was just expecting a bit more clarity between them since they are dealing with the threat of a dangerous supernatural who controls the men.
This was an interesting world with a very captivating group of characters who are just trying to change their lives around. I really enjoyed getting to know each of these men, even Henrick the vampire who is kind of a terrible person. While these four are reluctantly working together, we quickly see that they are growing closer and more protective of each other, much like a found family. Mina really helps bridge the gap for them all and I really can’t wait to read more of this series to see how their friendship/found family grows.
Overall, this was a solid start for a series and I really look forward to reading the next book. I am very curious to see how the men act once the rest of her family arrives and how they will deal with the dangerous godfather.
