4 stars – It was really good

Armand Argeneau has spent years hiding on his farms away from his family. After his third wife unfortunately died he no longer feels he can keep them safe, especially the women in his family.  Now Eshe d’Aureus is staying on his farm for two weeks to hide out and see if she can determine what actually happened to his wives, not only because he is her life mate, but because his son’s Nicholas’ life depends on it.

After reading the previous book, I was very interested in Armand’s story and who has been killing the women in his family. While I was a bit apprehensive about this being boring because Armand is a farmer, I enjoyed this and didn’t think the farming really overshadowed the story.

Armand is a lonely man who has isolated himself out of necessity, but doesn’t tell anyone that. He suspects his wives have been murdered, but never found any evidence to pin it on anyone. So instead of asking for help from his brother Lucian, he isolates himself. I understand his reasoning, but think he still probably should have talked to his brother about this, it would have probably saved the family a lot of heartache. That said, I still liked Armand a lot.

Eshe was a wonderful heroine. She was a rogue hunter who rode motorcycles and wasn’t afraid of anything it seemed. I loved her, especially after learning more about her backstory. She also lost her mate, but it just pushed her to love what family she had left more. Eshe is probably my second favorite heroine in this series so far, with Margueritte being the first.

Eshe and Armand are both lucky because they have found a second life mate. They had great chemistry and I really enjoyed their romance. It mixed perfectly with the hunt for the truth. The hunt for the murderers was filled with danger and more attempted murder. I had a suspicion on who the murder might be, but wasn’t expecting some of the reveals at the end or for how they were dealt with. I love when an ending can surprise you.

Overall, this was a great addition to the series. I enjoyed getting to find out what happened with these murders and why it was done to begin with. Hopefully we get to see more of these two in future books because I really liked Eshe and want to see more of her.

TW: death of spouses; death of adult children recounted; grief; fire and fire injuries; self-immolation; kidnapping; violence and murder;
