3 stars – I liked it

Samantha Willan is a workaholic lawyer and is grateful she can finally take a vacation to her family’s vacation cottage with her sisters. When she meets her new neighbor, Garrett Mortimer, she finds herself jumping into a vacation fling to get over her ex. What she doesn’t expect is to fall for Mortimer or for him to reveal he is a vampire.

This book is the first one in the series that branches off from the main Argeneau family and starts the mini internal series, Rogue Hunter. Garrett Mortimer works for the council as a rogue vampire hunter. During this mission he is partnered with Justin Bricker and Decker Pimms and they are searching for a rogue who has been biting people in a vacation area. The mystery of who is doing the biting was minimal and when it was finally revealed who it was, it was underwhelming. I wasn’t expecting much since the book barely focused on it but it was still a bit of a disappointment.

Garrett Mortimer is a 800 year old vampire who expects his fated mate to look a certain way and wasn’t very happy when he realized Samantha didn’t match his vision. I didn’t really like Garrett in this. His thoughts on Samantha in the beginning are very negative and calls her Olive Oyl (from Popeye) as an insult. He does change his turn after actually getting to know her but I can’t get over his initial feelings about her.

Samantha Willan is a hard working lawyer who doesn’t have a healthy work-life balance. This vacation is just what she needs to get a break and spend time with her sisters. While I liked Samantha, she was a bit of a pushover when it comes to work. She agrees to help her boss look for his goddaughter while she is on vacation, instead of just having him call the police and ask for a wellness check. This side adventure was pointless and could have just been solved if she had talked to the neighbors right away or had the cops do that. In other situations though, Sam didn’t back down and put other people in their place.

Samantha and Mortimer have instant attraction and chemistry, like all the couples in this series. While I still enjoyed this couple overall, I just never really loved either of them, especially Mortimer. But this is the first book where the life mate doesn’t instantly turn, and I like seeing something a bit different.

Overall, this was fine. I didn’t love these two and the case of the rogue was very lackluster. I hope I like the rest of the rogue hunters books more.
