3 stars – I liked it

Gunnie Lizbeth Rose has healed from her previous assignment and has joined a new crew. The Lucky Crew is tasked with delivering a crate to a town called Dixie but just when it looks like it will be an easy trip, their train derails and they are attacked. What she really doesn’t expect though is to be working with Ilya again.

This was another action packed and fascinating adventure for Gunnie. This story took place all in the town of Dixie, which was a very racist and patriarchy centered town. Lizbeth finds herself playing the role of wife to Ilya while they search the town for their missing cargo. While the previous story presented us a more laid back Ilya, in this one we see that he has hardened by the actions of his father and the fallout from it. Lizbeth is also a harder woman and even more suspicious of those around her.

The search for the missing cargo was interesting because this town was very different from the previous setting. While this town might look beautiful it hides a rotten heart that is filled with racism and hate. The world building in this series has been very enjoyable and I appreciate that we are seeing more of the country than just Texana. The cargo ended up being very unique, especially after the grigori manipulated it.

Overall, this was another great addition to this series. The character development in this series has been very enjoyable and I can’t wait to see how they change as this series progresses. Also this is a very unique world that keeps you on your toes because you never know what will happen next.

TW: gun violence; death; train explosion and derailment; injuries and blood; slavery and racism; torture; lynching;
