4 stars – It was really good

When Vincent realizes that someone is sabotaging his theater businesses, he calls Bastian for help. Bastian sends Jackie Morris, Private Investigator and her partner, Tiny McGraw to help him. What he doesn’t expect is to find himself quickly growing to like Jackie or realizing that she may be his life mate.

Vincent is a unique immortal because he cannot drink bagged blood so has to rely on feeding from humans. He struggles to feed enough to stave off the hunger pains and his growing lethargy on life isn’t helping. The repeated sabotage against his plays has made feeding even more dangerous because his victims are being targeted. I really liked Vincent in the previous books but in this one we really got to meet the true person behind all the previous pranks. While he is still cheerful, we also see that he is worn down by life and has lost a lot of enjoyment in his career. I really enjoyed watching Vincent start eating again and taking an interest in what is going on in the world around him, even if he is a bit naive in how he thinks people will act.

Jackie is a private investigator and owner of an investigative business. She is smart, capable, and extremely distrusting of vampires because of her past experiences. I really liked Jackie and how efficient she was in this investigation. She doesn’t do anything stupid like some female PI characters are written to do. Also I love a capable woman who isn’t afraid to admit she is falling for her vampire client.

Jackie and Vincent’s relationship was really enjoyable. While they both are attracted to each other, their relationship is slowly building as they get to know each other during this case. I really enjoyed the pace of their relationship and how we see Jackie work through her fear of vampires and the trauma of her past. Another thing I appreciated was that even though there was a bit of concern at one point that Jackie couldn’t be turned, it didn’t end up being drawn out and a solution was found, even if it was an unexpected one.

The sabotage case in this was really interesting because it wasn’t until the end that I figured out who the villain was. I love when that happens. Also the villain’s reason for attacking Vincent was so sad and terrible, but it made this whole vendetta make sense to me.

This book also introduced us to another immortal family, the Notte. Two of them work for Vincent and they end up pulling in quite a few other members of their family. I liked the brief glimpse we got of all the Notte family members and look forward to reading their books, especially since we know that Marguerite and Tiny plan on helping them with a case.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable Argeneau book and I look forward to the next one. I really can’t wait to get to Marguerite and Tiny’s books now because I really like those two.

TW: death of parents, including from cancer and fire discussed; recounting of being controlled unwillingly by a vampire; violence, death, and blood; pedophilia discussed;
