Title: A Song For You and I
Author: K. O’Neill
Pages: 240

After reading and enjoying O’Neill’s previous books, I instantly checked this out when I saw they had a new release. This story is about a novice ranger who has been tasked with protecting their village. Rowan’s eagerness to prove themselves leads to his pegasus, Kes, getting injured and Rowan questioning if they will be able to achieve their dream of being a full ranger.
Like all of O’Neill’s previous books, this was very cute and beautifully illustrated. This was a very sweet and cute story about self-acceptance, growth, and courage. It’s learning what kind of person you are and embracing your truths. Rowan and Leone were both interesting characters who help each other heal as they travel the countryside.
While I did enjoy the story overall and find the artwork beautiful, I do wish there had been more depth to the characters. For example, Rowan decides to change their name and pronouns but we don’t get anyone’s reaction to this besides Leone’s. How did the Rangers react to this? We assume positively but it’s just glossed over so we don’t know for sure. I just wish there had been a bit more to this very big change to Rowan’s life.
