3 stars – I liked it

King Oberon reigned over the Dark Court in Lyonesse for centuries until an assassination attempt on his life changed everything. Now he lies unconscious in his snow-covered palace, while his power battles the enchantment that threatens to kill him. His people have asked skilled trauma surgeon and magic user, Dr. Kathryn Shaw, to attempt to stop the curse and free him from his slumber.

Dr. Katheryn Shaw has been a background character throughout the Elder Races series but we knew relatively little about her until this series when she offered the crossroad house to Sophie. Katheryn is a falcon shifter with an extreme drive to help those injured. She has a very successful job as trauma surgeon for the wyr domain but she can’t resist the challenge of helping Oberon.

Oberon is a powerful king and wyr. He struggles with the enchantment that is killing him and has been turning him emotionless. Oberon was a bit annoying in the beginning because his emotions are turned off and he pushes boundaries. Once he is freed of the enchantment, I liked him much more, especially his drive to help his people and restore his kingdom.

Things happen quickly in this book once Oberon is freed and it made it hard to put this book down. The Dark Court mobilizes to deal with Isabeau but it doesn’t go how anyone expected. I really liked Oberon’s determination to save as many lives as possible and to take down Isabeu. It was a very interesting, and successful, battle. Isabeu got what she deserved in the end and I liked how it went down.

Overall, this was a great ending for this series. I enjoyed getting to know more about the Dark and Light court and the people who were a part of them. Also, it was kinda great to get more about the Elder Races world, especially since Oberon and his parties were mentioned in one of the books in that series. It is just great to get more stories in this world and I would totally read more spin-off’s set in this world.
