3 stars – I liked it

Aryal has hated the new Sentinel Quentin Caeravorn since she met him. She believes he is a criminal and has spent over a year trying to pin him with a crime. Their hatred is well known and it has started causing tension between the sentinels. When they push too far, Dragos exiles them for two weeks to  the Elven land of Numenlaur to do a reconnaissance mission.

This was an aggressive and tension filled book for this series. I will admit, I am not the biggest fan of Aryal because she hasn’t had much depth to her character up to this point. She has just been the crazy and angry harpy, and that is still true, but we get to see a bit more out of her in this, which improved my opinion of her character. I still don’t love her but she is tolerable now.

Quentin is the new wyr Sentinel and the first non-avian wyr. We met him briefly in book one and then nothing until the previous book where he competed in the Sentinel Games and won. I liked Quentin. He may not like Dragos but he does understand the importance of his empire and wants to help protect it. I also think he has been a good friend to Pia. We do learn that he has a secret though that has weighed him down and it is what he has been trying to keep from Aryal.

These two hate each other because of Aryal’s determination to brand him a criminal. They think it’s all hate but they quickly realize once they are in Numenlaur that their hatred is also filled with attraction. I struggled a bit at first to see these two as an actual couple but as the story progressed they finally got to know each other, I could finally see it. These two dealt with a lot in a short period of time and it really strengthened the bond of their burgeoning feelings.

Overall, this was a tense enemies to lovers romance that brought two very dominant wyr together. I enjoyed this but it wasn’t my favorite out of series.

TW: mass death discussed; abandonment and death of animals and children; grief;
