Title: Some Girls Bite
Author: Chloe Neil
Series: Chicagoland Vampires #1
Pages: 354

The life of a graduate student isn’t glamorous, but it was what Merit wanted. But when a rogue vampire attacks her, she is reduced by another vampire who has to turn her to save her. Her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House and now she has to find her place in his house and figure out her new lifestyle.
Merit is a reluctant vampire. She didn’t give consent to be turned and so she struggles with being a part of the clan like House and submitting to her liege’s will. Merit in the beginning was a bit annoying for me. She went about her days trying to learn more about the paranormal world and being a vampire, but she didn’t start with the book they specifically gave her that explains everything. For an English Lit major, that didn’t make sense and annoyed me so much. Like everyone keeps telling her to read the book yet it took her days to do it.
The vampire houses in this world are very interesting, especially with the positions that can be held within. Merit’s position is an interesting one and I liked seeing how it embolden her. She definitely became a lot more confident after accepting the position and it helped her accept her vampire status. I actually liked her more in the last half of the story. But I am also still unclear on how she became so powerful and what that actually means besides the ability to not be persuaded, but that might come into play in future books.
I enjoyed this story for the most part, but I did find that the pacing was a bit off for me at times. There was just a lot of down time where not a lot seemed to be happening and it wasn’t really progressing the story, so it took me a little longer to get through this book because of the pacing issues.
Overall, this was an interesting take on a paranormal and vampire filled world. While I did have a few issues with this one, I want to read the next book to see what will happen next with Merit.
