3 stars – I liked it

Niniane “Tricks” Lorelle is heir to the Dark Fae throne and has been in hiding for years after her uncle killed her family. Now that he is dead she can finally take the throne and lead the dark fae to a new era, but first she has to survive till her coronation and Tiago Black Eagle is determined to make that happen.

After meeting Niniane in the previous book, I was very interested in seeing how her ascension to the throne went. I also just really liked her so I wanted to learn more about her and see her find happiness. Niniane is a spunky and capable woman who really knows how to work the public and make connections. I liked that while she was a girly girl, she was also a capable fighter and survivor.

Tiago was a protective alpha male who really struggles with communicating his feelings. I struggled with liking him. I liked that he was protective but I felt like it was a little too much sometimes. I didn’t love him constantly carrying Niniane around was a bit too much. He was also very aggressive towards others throughout a lot of this book, which I know he was concerned about assassins, but it just felt like he was one of those men who had a hair trigger with their anger and aggression.

While I did enjoy this story overall, I just think Niniane and Tiago’s relationship wasn’t my favorite because of how alpha and controlling Tiago felt.  But I still really enjoy learning more about the world of the Elder Races and all the different races within. I am especially interested in the vampires now that we meet a group of them.

TW: assassination attempts; blood and injuries; death of a friend; death of family mentioned;
