4 stars – It was really good

Prequel takes a look at the rise of fascist tendencies in the US today and how it was also prevalent in the past. In the 40s the pro-fascist, pro-Hitler, antisemitic movement was large and it was funded by Germany’s, who sent out millions of leaflets and letters with the help of Congressional frank mail.

This book apparently started in Maddow’s podcast, Ultra, which explored how close America came to falling into Nazi Fascism leading up to and during WW2. I haven’t listened to that podcast, but I don’t think it’s necessary since Maddow did a great job at presenting the timeline of events in this book.

This was a very interesting look at the rise of fascism and antisemitism in America, especially since it was being pushed by our own congressmen. As someone who has spent her adult life trying to learn about the history that isn’t taught in schools, I am very surprised that this is the first time I have heard about this part of history. But, they did everything they could to try and hide it after the fact it seems.

Overall, this was a fascinating and troubling read that makes you reevaluate what you know about the past and the current political climate.
