3 stars – I liked it

Alexei Karsyn keeps people at a distance and most people respect that boundary, except Claude who is doing everything he can to get close to him. But when vampire hunters start targeting Alexei and other vampires in the area, everything changes.

I was excited to start this book because I wanted to know more about Karsyn. He has been the quiet and brooding Russian of the VRC from the beginning, but there had to be a reason why he tries to push everyone away. Karsyn may be a grump but he has a heart of gold hiding under it. I really enjoyed getting to know more about him and why he is the way he is. His past was heartbreaking and the betrayals he went through really affected him. It was nice seeing him open up to Claude and finally start to love again and overcome his past and heal from it. Also, I just loved that he was such an animal person but tried so hard to hide it.

Claude is a showy, vibrant, and bookish vampire who is very straightforward. I liked Claude in the previous books, but in this we get to see more vibrant Claude. We actually get to see Claude fight for Alexei and it was great to see more sides of this ancient vampire. While Claude might be outgoing, I really liked the fact that he understood Alexei and accepted him how he was, including the fact that he wasn’t as social and preferred animals over people. I loved that Claude was always giving him things and trying to take care of him, especially since it made him grumpy but also happy.

The VRC case in this involves vampire hunters who are tied to Alexei’s past. It was a very interesting and emotional case, which made it hard to put the book down. Overall, this was another great VRC book and I am glad we are getting books with some of the other characters on the team. I can’t wait to see what happens next for the VRC.
