After months of planning and hard fought battles Eragon, the Varden, and their allies have entered the final battle to take down King Galbitorix. This was a long and battle heavy book filled with a lot of heartache, pain, and hope. From the very beginning of this book we see battle after battle of the Varden and their allies gaining more ground against Galbatorix’s army and getting closer to Urû’baen, where he resides. Galbatorix continues to show how powerful he is when he sends Thorn and Muragh in to capture Nasuada, causing Eragon to take over leadership of the Varden for the final battle.
After three books we are finally getting to see the final battle against Galabtorix and it was a huge one. This book is basically all battles with the end being the biggest one against Galbatorix, which makes sense because we are at the final confrontation, but I was grateful for the brief reprieves we had without battles, like Eragon taking the trip to the Rock of Kuthian. Galbatorix has been the big bad in this series but we don’t get to actually see him until this book and it was great to see that he lived up to his name. I think he was a great and extremely cunning villain who really knows how to manipulate situations in his favor.
The final battle against Galbatorix was action packed, unexpected, and deadly. I was not expecting Galbatorix to be so powerful and easily control everyone but it made for an interesting and captivating battle that I didn’t want to stop. How Eragon stops Galbatorix was so unique and unexpected but worked perfectly to bring this villain down. He finally got to see and feel the true horror of what he has wrought on the world and that is how it should have been.
After the fall of Galbatorix we see a lot of changes happening around Alagaësia. Nasuada becomes queen, the green dragon hatches, Eragon and Saphira help set up peace between the different races that will last, and we learn that not all the dragon eggs were destroyed when Galbatorix rose to power. Eragon and Saphira have come so far since the first book. Their journey has been long and filled with many trials and heartbreak but while the Galbiatorix may be dead, more heartbreak is still headed their way when they fulfill Angela’s prophecy and realize they will be leaving Alagaësia.
Overall, this was a very long and hardfought journey for Eragon and Saphira but I really enjoyed it. I look forward to reading Murtagh’s book next to see what he will be doing now that he is finally free of Galbatorix and can be his own person for once.
