4 stars – It was really good

Carlos “Steady” Soto has been charged with guarding the woman he once loved and lost. While it starts as a simple job, things quickly change when Abby is kidnapped and held in the rainforest. Now Steady and Abby have to make their way to safety while dodging their enemies, dangerous animals, and the rainforest’s dangerous storms.

Steady and Abby met when they were in college eight years ago. But when Steady’s sister is killed during an attempt on Abby’s life, things change forever. Steady went into the military and didn’t see Abby again until this job. While they may have spent years apart, their feelings for each other are still there. I really enjoyed getting to see these two reunite and work through the issues that keep them apart.

Abby was an extremely smart woman who was also extremely traumatized by the many attempts at her life from being the president’s daughter. I really felt for her and understood why she had pushed Carlos away. It did seem like she should have had therapy for the PTSD and her guilt but maybe she did and it just isn’t mentioned. I still really enjoyed Abby and look forward to seeing more of her in the future.

We also finally get to see Dan reappear in this series. He has been pretty MIA since the first book and the death of his wife but he went through rehab and is back on missions. I love that we see him rejoin his brothers and is getting back on the horse. I assume Penni and his story isn’t over and I look forward to it.

Overall, this was another action packed and emotional relationship. I enjoyed Steady and Abby’s story a lot, and the bonus sections with Dan and Penni. I am very interested in seeing what happens next, especially for Ozzie. Also I now want to read more about Dan’s old army group and their treasure hunting business (Deep Six series).

CW: death of sibling and friend; bombings; kidnapping and drugging; life threatening injuries; alcoholism briefly mentioned; death of wife mentioned; PTSD;
