5 stars – I loved it!

“For most people, a potentially murderous viscount, a missing host, and a vengeful ghost might seem out of the realm of petty irritations. But then, most people have not led my life.”

After struggling with the pacing of the first two books, I didn’t expect to fall in love with this series but the past two books have proved me wrong. I loved this book! I couldn’t put it down, especially towards the end when the villain was being revealed.

“Hearts are the same as bones, you know,…One may be broken into a thousand pieces, but when they are bound together again and a heart is made whole, the love it gives will be all the fiercer.”

After three books with Stoker and Veronica ignoring their feelings I wasn’t expecting all the feelings in this one, especially after the beginning of this book. But when Stoker finally admits his feelings he doesn’t hold anything back and I loved him so much more now. I loved watching him tease Veronica with his body and make her jealous when she tries to keep him at arm’s length. Sadly, we have to wait till the next book to see how their relationship actually plays out.

“Veronica Speedwell, I meant it then and I mean it now and I shall mean it with every breath until my last. I love you.”

Veronica is full of contradictions in this. She is struggling with her feelings for Stoker and it really causes her to lose all logic and act more emotional than normal. It was a bit frustrating but it makes sense with her fear of marriage. She has never seen a married couple with a true partnership so marriage and love is terrifying for her. I like that we are seeing Veronica struggle with this because she is an independent woman who thought she knew her future, and Stoker changes all that. I can’t wait to see how this plays out in the next book.

The mystery in this one was very fascinating. I wasn’t expecting the villain in this one. I also really liked that we finally get to learn more about Tiberius and his past. We also see him and Stoker mend their relationship a little so hopefully we see more of him in the future. Overall, this was a wonderful book and I couldn’t put it down. I really can’t wait to see what trouble these two get into in the next book.

Trigger Warnings: domestic violence discussed; death of wife recounted;  death of a child recounted; verbal abuse; near drowning; grief; suicide discussed
