Title: Dark Frost
Author: Jennifer Estep
Series: Mythos Academy #3
Pages: 401

The new semester at Mythos Academy starts out with a new attack by the Reapers that leaves many students dead or wounded. Gwen is even more determined to find the Helheim dagger now but it looks like she will mostly be doing it alone.
I really enjoyed this one. Gwen has seen more death and pain from the Reapers and it is really starting to affect her. She is struggling under the pressure of being Nike’s champion but also from being on the outs with her friends. Daphne is pushing her away and so is Logan again. Gwen just can’t get an emotional break it seems but it is making her stronger in the long run.
Gwen really steps up and becomes a warrior in this one. She is still training hard but still struggles a lot. After the multiple attacks she has been in, she really understands how quickly life can be taken. I like that we are seeing a more mature Gwen starting to peek through. She is starting to embrace the responsibilities, even if it is a bit reluctantly. Also we see some of the darker aspects of Gwen’s abilities in this one and how she is struggling to deal with it.
While this is a YA book, I am really enjoying this mythical academy. I really like Gwen and her friends, even when they are having their bitchy teen moments. Estep just does a great job at creating great characters in a fascinating universe. I can’t wait to see what happens next for Gwen, especially since the danger just keeps ramping up.
Trigger Warnings: kidnapping, death, violence, animal death
