3 stars – I liked it

I have been meaning to reread this series since I read The Sinner (BDB #18) and she was reintroduced. Well I barely remembered her, nor did I really enjoy her in that book, so I figured I should reread this series before the newest book comes out.

This series is different from BDB because it’s more of an Urban Fantasy than a paranormal romance. The main focus is on Jim Heron who is chosen by the angels to fight for the side of Heaven. He is tasked with saving seven souls, with his first one being Vin Di Pietro, who is the other main character in this story. This book bounces between Jim, Vin, and Marie-Therese, who is also a side character in the BDB series.

So this book has a very slow build up because there is a lot of world building and character introductions for the first half, but it really picks up in the second half of the book. I enjoyed this story and the character within it. Jim, and his backstory, was a very interesting hero and I really look forward to seeing him continue his fight for Heaven.

Vin and Marie-Therese’s relationship was a quick instant-love one that is filled with danger. Vin is in a relationship with another woman the first time he meets Marie-Therese, but he doesn’t pursue anything with her until he ends it with Devina. Devina was a very interesting take on a demon and I am very interested in learning more about her.

Overall, this is an interesting story and I really can’t wait to learn more about Jim and the other angels.
