3 stars – I liked it

Asher, a former assassin in the Hunter program, is a loner who has spent the last 20 years living in the desert outside of Las Vegas.  When he thwarts a killing in the middle of the desert he meets a beautiful Breedmate who draws him into her war with a Vegas kingpin.

This was a great start to a spin-off series. While Asher may be free of the chains that bound him in his youth he still doesn’t actually live his life. He hides away in the desert and doesn’t interact with others. Meeting Naomi shows him how lonely and isolated his life has become. She shows him how to live and love. As with most Breed males, Asher was a protective alpha male who struggles with his feelings. His past as a Hunter was heartbreaking and made worse by his Breed ability.

Naomi was an extremely smart and compassionate woman. Her quest for vengeance against a casino owner was understandable but it overrides her clear thinking as well. I adored her dedication to helping homeless kids and running a shelter with her friend Michael. While I did think she should have known that her vengeance would have extreme consequences, it was still heartbreaking that it did. I liked Naomi overall, especially since she brought love and life to a man who thought he couldn’t have either.

Overall, this was a good couple and a good start to a spin-off series. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book, which I hope is Cain’s.
