4 stars – It was really good

Lady Aline Marsden loves John McKenna but their love is forbidden because of their different class stations. When their secret is discovered both of their worlds are shattered and McKenna is forced to leave. Twelve years later, McKenna finally returns and is determined to have Alien, but things are no longer the same between them.

“McKenna was her counterpart, her compass, her sanctuary.”

I have finally found another Kleypas book that I loved! McKenna and Aline’s story was a wonderful second chance historically filled with love, heartache, and lots of frustration. I instantly was captivated by Aline and McKenna’s childhood love and heartbreak when they were found out. Aline was a beautiful woman but was extremely insecure about her body because of an accident shortly after McKenna left. I did find her insecurities understandable but thought she should have told McKenna about them sooner, especially since she knew the depths of her feelings for her.

McKenna was an arrogant and ruthless businessman, which has given him a  life he never would have had if he had stayed in England. I could easily understand his anger and determination for revenge against Aline and her family. From the very beginning of this book you could feel the intense love between these two and it just grew strong in the years they were apart. I loved the intense chemistry and emotions between these two. Like I said, I couldn’t put their story down and loved every minute of it.

This book also featured a second couple, which was surprising, but also very enjoyable. Livia, Aline’s sister, finds her second chance at love in the arms of the American Gideon Shaw. I adored Livia and Gideon. Their relationship was sweet. I loved that meeting Livia pushed Gideon to become sober and that they separated during the sobriety process. I do wish we could have seen more of their relationship after he became sober but maybe they will appear in future books.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable historical romance with two wonderful couples. I am so glad I took a chance with this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series now.

Trigger warnings: References of a miscarriage, the death of a fiancé, and alcoholism.
