4 stars – It was really good

When Jane Jameson is fired she doesn’t think her day could get any worse, but it does. On her way home she is mistaken for a deer, shot, and left for dead. She finds herself saved by the stranger she meets at a bar, who apparently is a vampire.

After listening to the Mystic Bayou series on audio and loving it I decided to check out her other series on audio as well. I read this series years ago but didn’t remember anything about it so I figured now would be a good time for a reread. I loved this book. Molly Harper does a wonderful job at writing hilarious and quirky characters. Also Amanda Ronconi has the perfect sarcastic tone for embodying Jane Jameson.

Jane is a smart, sarcastic, ditzy, and wonderful character. She is constantly getting into shenanigans without even trying to. She is struggling to deal with all the changes that come with being a vampire. On top of that she is also struggling with being attracted to the vampire who turned her, Gabriel. While we do get some romantic scenes in this book, the main focus is on Jane dealing with her new lifestyle and trying to discover who is targeting her for being a vampire. I liked that we don’t get a full blown relationship in this first book since this whole series is dedicated to Jane. I really can’t wait to see how their relationship will evolve as the series goes on.

This book does a lot of world building but I don’t think it distracts from Jane’s story. It was nice to get small introductions of the different kinds of characters in this world, which I hope to explore more in the later books. I also liked that each chapter starts with an excerpt from The Guide For the Newly Undead. Also I adored Jane’s friend Zeb. He was just a wonderful friend, also extremely goofy. I loved his girlfriend as well.

Overall, this was a wonderful and hilarious look into the life of Jane Jameson. I can’t wait to start the second book and see what shenanigans she gets into next.
