5 stars – I loved it!

This is the introduction of Hellboy, who was summoned to Earth during WWII to end the world. Hellboy is one of the paranormal investigators in the world and goes all over the world fighting monsters and demons, with the help of his team.

I originally read the Hellboy series in 2019 and while I planned on reading the rest of the Mignolaverse this year, I thought I remembered most of the events and wouldn’t need to reread this series. Well apparently I had forgotten a lot, so I am rereading this before I continue reading the rest of the B.P.R.D. comics.

Hellboy is one of my favorite Mignola characters. He is constantly jumping into danger and beating the crap out of the monsters, which always make for intense battles. In these stories, he starts to get hints of why he was brought to Earth, which just makes him even more determined to avoid the truth. This is the beginning of his story but it also shows how Hellboy is already starting to get worn down by his position in the B.P.R.D.

This was a great start to a comic series and a great introduction to a fantastic world. Mignola has a wonderful imagination that just amazes me. Also I can’t get enough of the artwork in Hellboy. I love the contrast between the black shadows with pops of color for characters.
