Red-Haired Ash Reads

Amelia Peabody, a rebel of the Victorian age, embarks on an Egyptian adventure expecting to explore the sites and see past history. Instead she rescues a young Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who was abandoned by her scoundrel lover, solves a mystery of a haunting mummy, and falls for the dashing but annoying Radcliffe. 

I slowly read this book over a few days because I was enjoying it so much I wanted to savor it. I adored Amelia and Evelyn. They were both strong, independent women, who were determined to enjoy their lives the way they wanted. Radcliff was a great guy who was also extremely grumpy, especially towards Amelia. I loved his dedication to preserving and documenting Egypts history. His declaration of love at the end of the book made me so giddy I just couldn’t stop smiling, especially since I went into this book with the expectation of no romance. 

“Peabody, you may as well hear the truth. I am mad about you! Since the day you walked into my tomb and started ordering us all about, I have known you were the only woman for me.”

The mystery was great. I loved the whole premise of it, even though I did figure out who the bad guy was before they did, but that doesn’t bother me. I enjoyed the thrill of the hunt for the bad guy, especially since it was centered around the city of Amarna which Akhetaten (referred to as Khuenaten in the book) built. 

Overall, this book was a wonderful surprise for me. I expected to like it but I didn’t think I would be glued to the story and characters like I was. Peter’s did an amazing job with creating captivating characters set in this historical world.
