5 stars – I loved it!

“Trust to a Mercant is a complicated thing. It usually requires years of acquaintance, several background checks, and a probationary period.” —Ena Mercant (circa 2074)

Silver Mercant is the director of the worldwide emergency response network, EmNet. The last thing she needs in her busy life in a pushy alpha bear. But when an assassin almost succeeds in poisoning her, she allows herself to be hidden in the safety of StoneWaters denhome.

While I was excited for a new series in this world I was a little concerned that I would be bored with it. But this book took me back to the first books in the Psy-Changeling series, which are my favorite. While I have enjoyed her newer books, I felt they were centered more around the overarching story instead of the romance. This one was all about the romance and I loved it.

Another reason I loved this book was that it was bear shifters. They were the best. They were curious, kind, protective, and just so perfect I couldn’t help but love them all. I especially loved the Alpha, Valentin Nikolaev. He had such a huge heart that I just couldn’t help but love him. It was so easy to see why a Psy like Silver would fall for this brash, curious, and protective bear.

“Love is no rose. It’s a goddamn weed that digs its roots in so deep, there’s no hope of getting it out.” —Nina Valance, human novelist married to a telekinetic (circa 1977)

Silver has been a quiet but key presence in Kaleb’s business. I have always been curious about her and her family so I was happy to see her get her own book. Not only do I love how smart and capable Silver is, I loved how courageous she was. She was willing to break her silence even if it meant possible insanity. I quite liked her.

“I have no problem with who I am….I am made up of all parts of me, and they are all critical to Silver Fucking Mercant.”

Another thing I enjoyed about this book was the theme of family. The bears are a tight knit community that take care of each other. But we also see the family bond with the Mercant’s. Ena is a powerful matriarch and alpha in her own right who will do anything to protect her family, especially Silver. We also meet Arwen, Silver’s brother, who is an E-Psy and the heart of the Mercant family. I really hope we get more of these two, especially Arwen. This was a great beginning for a spin-off series and I can’t wait to read the next one.
